¿Por qué las mujeres tenemos más autoinmunidad?
Cerca del 80% de las personas con enfermedades autoinmunes son mujeres. Pero ¿por qué?
Durante años, gran parte de la explicación se centró en las hormonas. Hoy sabemos que la historia es bastante más interesante. También importan los dos cromosomas X, genes inmunológicos como el receptor TLR7 y hasta Xist, la molécula encargada de silenciar uno de esos cromosomas X.
En este te platico de por qué tener dos X puede cambiar la forma en que funciona el sistema inmune, qué nos han enseñado enfermedades como lupus, Sjögren y esclerosis múltiple, qué papel juegan realmente los estrógenos en la autoinmunidad y por qué decir simplemente que “las mujeres tienen un sistema inmune más fuerte” se queda muy corto para explicar todo esto.
Porque sí, las mujeres desarrollamos más autoinmunidad. Pero la explicación es mucho más interesante y compleja que decir “son las hormonas”.

Porque la creatina no vive nada más en el gimnasio...
¡Nuestro cerebro también utiliza el sistema creatina-fosfocreatina para manejar sus enormes necesidades de energía!
Hoy te platico cómo la creatina funciona como una batería de energía para el cerebro y cuándo puede ayudar a la memoria, a la fatiga mental y el ánimo.
Hay evidencia que nos dice que los beneficios son más claros cuando el cerebro está bajo presión (privación de sueño, esfuerzo mental) y también tenemos señales prometedoras como complemento en depresión...aunque los resultados son mixtos en personas sanas.
¿Qué pasa cuando estamos desvelados y el cerebro tiene que seguir funcionando? ¿Sirve para la memoria? ¿Para esa sensación de fatiga mental? ¿Y por qué estamos estudiando creatina también en depresión?
Hoy les cuento qué sabemos, y qué todavía no sabemos.

La creatina no es sólo cosa de músculo y del gimnasio. Tus células inmunes también utilizan creatina y su sistema energético, y en los últimos años hemos empezado a entender qué puede significar eso para su metabolismo y su función.
En este episodio te platico qué hacen los leucocitos con la creatina, qué se ha observado en linfocitos T (incluyendo reportes muy interesantes sobre los linfocitos T CD8+ citotóxicos y la respuesta antitumoral) y por qué todo esto todavía no significa que tomar creatina “fortalezca” tu sistema inmune.
Vamoa a ver cómo gran parte de la evidencia que tenemos sigue siendo preclínica, es decir, en células y en modelos animales...y la evidencia clínica en humanos es todavía limitada.
La biología detrás de esto está preciosa, y sabemos que la creatina es segura y valiosa para el rendimiento muscular en personas con riñones sanos. Pero la aplicación clínica de la creatina como enfoque en tu sistema inmune todavía se está escribiendo.

¿Las redes sociales realmente nos están estresando… o les estamos echando la culpa de todo?
Esta vez te platico del “doomscrolling”, del famoso “brain rot”, los videos cortos, la comparación social, el FOMO, el meta-estrés, el sueño y hasta el cortisol.
La evidencia es bastante más interesante que decir las redes son buenas o las redes son malas. La verdad es que, en promedio, los efectos de las redes sobre el estrés y el bienestar son modestos, pero pueden cambiar muchísimo dependiendo de quién las usa, cómo las usa y en qué momento.
Además, te cuento qué encontró un metaanálisis recién publicado sobre doomscrolling, qué pasa cuando reducimos el uso de redes en experimentos reales y por qué seguir brincando de video en video puede terminar dejándote más aburrida, no menos.
Y, terminamos con herramientas prácticas para que tú uses las redes… y no las redes a ti.

Este es uno de los podcasts más lindos que he grabado porque mezcla muchos temas de la inmunología moderna: el inflammaging y la inmunosenescencia.
Aquí te platico un poco de cómo envejece el sistema inmune en personas que alcanzan los 100 años: qué pasa con la inmunosenescencia, el inflammaging y el encuentro inesperado de unos linfocitos CD4 con capacidad citotóxica.
Hay varios mecanismos compensatorios que podrían favorecer la longevidad, y sobre todo la resiliencia inmunológica, incluyendo: la regulación del inflamasoma, la autofagia, el manejo de células senescentes y las diferencias en la microbiota.
Los centenarios nos enseñan sobre la adaptación y la remodelación inmunológica.

Aquí hay mucho que está en el camino de la ciencia...y también un poco en el camino del wellness. Y vale la pena hablar de eso...
En este episodio te platico la historia, los mecanismos cerebrales y la evidencia clínica de distintos psicodélicos (psilocibina, LSD, DMT/ayahuasca, ketamina/esketamina y MDMA) desde sus raíces tradicionales en México hasta los ensayos clínicos que están teniedno lugar ahora.
Tenemos algunos resultados prometedores (psilocibina en fase 3, esketamina aprobada), pero hay que hablar de las limitaciones metodológicas, los riesgos y el contexto clínico. No puedo dejar de enfatizar sobre la importancia de la supervisión profesional y la cautela. Por cierto, el microdosing que tanto vemos en reded...no tiene evidencia sólida para el manejo del estrés.

Te platico por qué el músculo es considerado como un órgano metabólico y endocrino. El músculo participa en la captación de glucosa, almacena energía y libera miocinas (como la IL‑6) que comunican con hígado, tejido adiposo, hueso y tu sistema inmune.
Te explico un poco sobre la relación bidireccional entre el músculo y la inmunidad, el impacto del envejecimiento y la inflamación de bajo grado. La recomendación práctica es moverse y hacer fortalecimiento regular para preservar tu masa muscular, tu fuerza y tu salud metabólica.

En LA RESPUESTA DE ESTRÉS no todo es pelear o huir. Aquí te explico las cuatro respuestas al estrés: pelear, huir, congelarse (freeze) y complacer (fawn) y cómo actúan a nivel fisiológico y clínico.
Fight, flight, freeze y fawn. Las has oído mil veces…
El problema es que no todas traen la misma ciencia adentro. Hoy abrimos el paquete y separamos lo que es fisiología bien establecida, lo que es un concepto clínico útil, y lo que tiene más de rollo que de laboratorio.
Te platico de por qué pelear y huir se disparan solitos; de por qué "congelarse" en realidad son cosas distintas (y de un dato importantísimo sobre por qué quedarse paralizada NO es consentir); del famoso "fawn"; y de la teoría polivagal, esa que citan en todos lados y que trae debate serio detrás.
Y lo más importante: ninguna de estas respuestas es un defecto de carácter.
